Bulkhead Lights
“Bulkhead” is a nautical term deriving from the old Nordic word “bulki” meaning cargo. Bulkheads are all the upright walls within the hull of a ship. In the 15th century European sailors and shipbuilders realized that walls within a vessel would prevent the cargo from shifting during sailing. In the nautical jargon, all vertical panels were called “heads,” and therefore all walls installed abeam in a vessel’s hull (at a right angle to the centerline of the vessel) were called “bulkheads.” Nowadays the term applies to all wall-like partitions dividing the ship into compartments, thus reinforcing the ship’s structure and preventing the spread of fire and flood. Bulkhead lights, accordingly, are light fixtures installed on the walls of ships. Introduced later in homes, working spaces and public areas, the Bulkhead Light fixtures have become an iconic feature of the industrial vintage and marine aesthetic – stylish, trendy and timeless.
